Disk Operating System (commonly abbreviated as DOS), was one of the most successful and widely used console-based Operating Systems on the market from the 1980's to mid-1990's (dominated the market roughly 1981-1995).

Microsoft Buyout

DOS's parent company was bought out by Microsoft in 1994, and DOS was to be packaged exclusively with its new Windows 32 visual (i.e. window-based GUI with a highly visual look & feel, and drag & drop file management) OS. DOS thenceforth became known as MS-DOS.
