De facto standard

A de facto standard is any standard which is backed by one major project champion (typically a major corporation or other private business interest with substantial financial power and resources) and is pushed (often times hostily) into the industry as a standard which is to be used and supported by all major players.

Such a standard typically starts out with a few key supporters, and ends up growing to such a size that it makes more sense to follow the existing standard than to develop your own from scratch.
