Hotlinking (also spelled hot-linking) is the process of stealing bandwidth by directly linking to a file from another website's web server. The practice in generally regarded as a dubious tactic by the web community, but still remains rampant in practice.

To prevent hotlinks, for example, you can write a REDIRECT directive in the .htaccess server access configuration file, as follows:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?YOURDOMAIN.com(/)?.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(flv|swf|png|bmp|js|css|jpg|jpe?g|gif|wmv|avi)$ embarassingMessageOrLogo.jpg [L,NC]
