Internet Protocol TeleVision (abbreviated as IPTV), is a catch-all term for live television broadcasted online (not re-broadcasted, but transmitted from a live source). For providing and sharing stream connectivity information between systems, it commonly uses either M3U/M3U8 (simple cross-platform "semi-colon/newline based" format), ASX (Windows-based streaming standard), mRSS (Media RSS extension) or even on occasion XSPF music playlist format.


IPTV systems that incorporate the Microsoft Windows Media platform can be used to deliver Windows Media-formatted streams over high-speed IP networks are an ideal solution set for delivering a continuous, error-free TV presentation with minimum latency to users within a closed network (often referred to as a "Walled Garden").
