Intellectual Property (commonly abbreviated as IP; as is the term Internet Protocol, with which this abbreviation is often confused) is a tangible or intangible representation of an idea (such as a: blueprint, sketch, schematic, academic white paper, report, thesis, presentation, diagram, article or text, etc), which represents something that could be potentially be turned into something of value (i.e. product or service offering, brand, trade name, company, etc) and is most commonly protected by Copyright and/or Trademarks.
