A license is a legally binding agreement which specifies the fair usage of a particular piece of intellectual property (such as the source code to a computer program, production copy of a Film or TV show, blueprint to a building, schematics or ingredients of a product, or ).

With the internet came a resurgence in the concept of the "open source" licensing model.

Not specifying a license means that your hosting provider or any developers or system administrators who are ever given access to your account can copy the code without any penalties. Specifying a license determines on what conditions someone may copy, or expressly prohibits any copying.


Open Source Initiative is an organization which aims to promote and support the open source licensing of major academic and commercial works of all types, but is particularly focused on software and algorithms.
