The Long Tail is a term often used in marketing and consumer psychology, but it often appears in a number of other disciplines as well. The Long Tail in business terms, describes a particular segment of consumers who prefer rare or unpopular titles. [1]

In a landmark paper on The Long Tail, Chris Anderson of WIRED Magazine wrote: "Forget squeezing millions from a few megahits at the top of the charts. The future of entertainment is in the millions of niche markets at the shallow end of the bitstream." [2]

Longtail (Company)

Longtail is an aptly named company co-founded by JW Media Player creator Jeroen Wijering, who amassed a near cult-like following on the web in praise of his excellent and customizable flash-based media player. The player's popularity arose from the dominance of Flash as a viable distribution medium for video, animation, games, 3D visualizations and other interactive or motion-based content on the web.

The company, as its name suggests, focuses on marketing to the Long Tail of the internet, through the JW Media Player suite of products (JW Video Player, Silverlight Video Player, Music Player and Image Rotator). They also provide excellent customer support for users of the players, which are all available for FREE under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike License[3]. For commercial use, or use via a CMS, a commerical license[4] is also available.
