Medavie Blue Cross (commonly abbreviated as MBC; formerly Atlantic Blue Cross then abbreviated as ABC) is one of the largest insurance providers in Canada and serves the Atlantic provinces (NB, NS, NL, PEI) as well as Ontario and Quebec.

Lines of Business

Blue Cross has many varied Lines Of Business (or LoBs) depending on the particular regional organization's policies & offerings, but they include:

Blue Cross & Blue Shield

Blue Cross & Blue Shield (BCBS) developed separately, with Blue Cross plans providing coverage for hospital services and Blue Shield covering physicians' services. Blue Cross was founded in 1929, and became the Blue Cross Association in 1960; while Blue Shield emerged in 1939 and the Blue Shield Association was created in 1948. The two organizations merged in 1982. They were each initially a not-for-profit business and service model originating from Dallas Texas, USA initially based on a campus Health plan for students at Baylor University. Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) today comprises 30 state Blue Cross organizations and serves over 100 million Americans.

Canadian Association of Blue Cross Plans

Canadian Association of Blue Cross Plans (CABCP) has served tens of millions of Canadian for over 70 years.[2] As of June 2015 MBC participates closely in partnership with, but operates completely separately from, the other major Blue Cross organizations across Canada (commonly referred to by employees as the other "Blues"). These organizations in the CABCP include:

MBC is often seen as the parent organization and the other Blue Cross organizations often lease or purchase software, technology, tools and processes initially researched & developed in-house at MBC. MBC in 2011 processed over $3.3 billion in claims[3].
