Mpeg Layer-4 (otherwise known as MP4 format) is a video playback format which has for quite some time been touted to be the next generation of video technologies. While it does have several benefits over other formats, until recently major drawbacks and technical issues prevented its widespread adoption.
Today, those barriers and issues have been largely resolved and MP4 seems poised to be cease to be a next-gen video technology and very soon become a de facto standard the way MP3 took the audio world by storm in the late 1990s.
