Renewable Energy
Renewable Energy (also known as sustainable energy) is a form of energy that can be sustained (i.e. used and reused without requiring a re-fill, constant replacements or re-charges) thus creating independence from the traditional energy "grid".

Off-the-Grid
Living "Off-the-Grid" (or Off-Grid for short) refers to living in a self-sufficient manner without reliance on one or more public utilities (i.e. not being connected to a "grid"). The term grid is mainly used in terms of not being connected to the main or national electrical grid but "Off-the-Grid" homes are typically fully autonomous; meaning they do not rely on municipal water supply, sewer, natural gas, electrical power grid, or similar utility services. When referring only to electricity, off-grid can be stand-alone power system or mini-grids powered by renewable energy sources, typically designed to provide a single dwelling or smaller community with electricity. Off-grid electrification is an approach to access electricity used in countries and areas with little access to electricity, due to geographically dispersed populations. A true off-grid house or community is able to operate completely independently of all traditional public utility services.

Government of Canada
Canada, one of the most resource-rich nations in the world, is finally beginning to wake-up to the need for sustainable energy sources. In the 2008 election, and, aside from the "Global Financial Disaster" it became one of the "hottest" topics for debate. Even when discussion turned to Financial issues and the Canadian Economy, it was often pointed out that energy independence could play a significant role in easing the effect of future financial crises, since Canada controls such a large portion of the world's resources, and resource price-fixing and manipulation has played a large part in the financial collapse.
