A URL Shortener is a service for reducing the number of characters in a URL, for ease of typing on a mobile device, or sharing via services that limit the total number of characters per message (i.e. SMS, certain IM clients, Twitter and Facebook-type SNS services with status updating services, etc). Shortened URLs are sometimes referred to as "Vanity URLs" or "marketing short-links".
