Universal Serial Bus (commonly abbreviated as USB) is a way of setting up communication between a computer and peripheral devices. USB is intended to replace many varieties of serial and parallel ports. USB can connect computer peripherals such as mice, keyboards, PDAs, gamepads and joysticks, scanners, digital cameras, printers, personal media players, flash drives, and external hard drives. USB's major success point was in the ability to establish an industry-wide standard, which several major hardware vendors agreed to follow (which in turn required most hardware manufacturers to follow suite or be left behind by their competition).

USB and similar "universal", "global" or industry-wide technology standards are key towards innovation and consumer freedom, and are an industry's natural reaction to strong consumer demand for simple and re-usable products and accessories, coupled with constanly-changing physical product needs and usages.
