May alphabets (such as Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Mongolian, Japanese, and many others, were not designed to run simply from left-to-right or right-to-left. As such, several compromises must be made when trying to input or display theese languages' alphabets on a standard computer screen.


Vertical Layouts

Vertical layouts may be accomplished by a number of designs/techniques, however one of the most advanced and fluid designs involves the use of CSS [1]


Scrolling Vertical Text

Slightly different than the above CSS example, Javascript can also be used to enhance regular horizontal (L-to-R) text and give it the ability to scroll vertically.
