2nd Generation (commonly abbreviated 2G) is an unofficial term used describe Mobile Internet services before the advent of the much faster, more remotely accessible 3G wireless technologies. The "Mobile portal" concept from 1G networks often extended into various TelCos' 2G wireless technologies as most of the early "Mobile Internet" services were in fact just 2G versions of the 1G Mobile portals, with limited additional functionality. By 2G, mobile web applications/pages were displayed via the standardized WML/WAP technologies. It wasn't until full-fledged 3G devices/networks that the broader internet (served as HTML/xHTML/cHTML) was finally made available to Mobile Internet users, including multimedia Mobile streaming capabiltiies.
