An International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique numeric commercial book identifier based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) code created by Gordon Foster, now Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin, for the booksellers and stationers W.H. Smith and others in 1966.[4]

".azw" file extension is Amazon Kindle's proprietary "wrapper" around the ".mobi" format, that includes some copyright protections, purchase delivery, licensing verification, and similar related functionality.

DocBook is a schema (available in several languages including RELAX NG, SGML and XML DTDs, and W3C XML Schema) maintained by the DocBook Technical Committee of OASIS. It is particularly well suited to books and papers about computer hardware and software (though it is by no means limited to these applications). It is an example of how new terms can be added to a vocabulary in a robust and extensible manner (i.e. without having a major impact on the usage or downgrading performance of other terms in the vocabulary).

PostScript (PS) is a computer language for creating vector graphics. It is a dynamically typed, concatenative programming language created in 1982. It is best known for its use as a page description language in the early electronic and desktop publishing areas.

TeX (pronounced tek) is a script for marking up and typesetting text into professional looking academic papers or documents written by Donald Knuth.

LaTeX (pronounced lay-tek; combination of creator Leslie Lamport's name and TeX) is a macro package (extension) of TeX, with additional mathematics and presentation markup. The primary goal of LaTeX is to simplify TeX typesetting, especially for documents containing mathematical formulae.

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is the single largest source of Linked Open Data for Books, Text and Literary works in digital format (eBook/Audiobook).

A site attempting to enable open access to e-prints of the world's most relevant texts in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance and Statistics. The site currently holds over 560,904 texts.

A project attempting to provide an informational page (URI) with overview and buy/read links to every book.

Audiobooks are spoken versions of the text of a regular book, as read by the author, a voice-actor, celebrity, or even as read by yourself for future reference.

Promoting a book (especially a self-published ebook) can be one of the most difficult tasks, second only to probably the process of gathering material and writing the book itself. The following is an eBook promotion checklist:

  1. Website
  2. Blog
  3. Goodreads author profile
  4. Facebook (dedicated Fan Page for Author/Book and at the right time Facebook Ads)
  5. Twitter (tweeting regularly and for special events, promoted[83] tweets)
  6. Book trailer & promotional videos (YouTube)
  7. Podcast & audio recordings of conversations/speeches/lectures (iTunes)
  8. Speaking Engagements (universities, libraries, book clubs, domain-specific venues)
  9. Book Signings/sales events
  10. Book Consignment (@ cafes/pawn-shops)
  11. Book Giveaways (no more than once per quarter)
  12. Book Groups & Clubs (such as MyBooksOut on Yahoo! Groups or local author clubs)
  13. Online Q&A sites (such as Quora) & Message Forums (find topically-relevant mailing lists, newsgroups and discussion forums online)
  14. Online Workshops (use tools like Google Hangouts, UStream and/or Skype and host your own "meet the author" sessions or live tutorials/discussions online)
  15. Blog tour (guest-blogging on other sites/blogs)
  16. Awards (enter writing/publishing contests)
  17. Mechanical Turk - comments, reviews, ratings
  18. Fiverr - backlinks, blog articles
