HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the innovation that is said to have truly begun the initial surge in interest and subsequent increases in both adoption and usage of the Internet as a viable communications medium. Before HTML and the first system for processing it (called the World Wide Web by its founder, Tim Berners-Lee) the Internet was at worst a painful academic exercise and at best a convenient military communication tool that was receiving a utilization that simply did not come close to realizing its full potential.

Because of the advent of HTML, a language for creating documents that could easily be shared through the internet, and the World Wide Web a system for displaying the HTML code in a human readable format, the Internet became a common household word and citizens became fixated with learning about and using it for their own personal productivity and entertainment purposes. HTML has provided a platform for sharing information that has lead to many other important new innovations in the way people communicate and do business, including: e-commerce, e-business, social networking, e-learning, chat, instant messaging, online video and countless others.
