Personal Digital Assistant (also referred to as Personal Desktop Assistant; commonly abbreviated PDA) is a small electronic device (in relative terms, smaller than the large and bulky Desktop computer hardware of the time) commonly used for mobile information and/or infotainment purposes. The earliest versions of PDAs were not able to connect to the internet wirelessly or remotely, and thus, typically came with a specific set of applications and software packages pre-loaded. In this sense, the PDA was useful for specific known tasks, but did not lend itself well to more dynamic experiences and interactions.

Future versions came with the ability to connect to a nearby Wi-Fi connection, and later with the ability to connect to a Mobile Internet (i.e. 2G or 3G) connection.

The most successful PDA company was most likely Palm, which sold millions of units of its wireless PDA device and OS.
