A Scanner is a piece of hardware and/or associated software used to replicate or copy an object or most commonly, a sheet of paper with some information on it (i.e. in the case of Photocopying). Whereas a traditional Photocopier simply scans and then prints the scanned image representation to paper, a full "Scanner" will generate and save (or send out to recipients through a specific medium such as Email) a digital record (sometimes in proprietary format but increasingly in common easier to open/reuse formats such as PDF, XPS, Word DOC, standard Image files, etc).
