Yahoo! is the world's #1 content portal and #3 search engine in terms of popularity (traffic and volume).

Microsoft Takeover Bid

In 2008 Yahoo! successfully fought off an aggressive takeover bid from both Microsoft[1] and billionaire investor Carl Icahn.[2][3][4]

It was only a matter of time until the software giant got their way though[5][6], as Bing became the official search engine powering Yahoo! search results as of August, 2010[7] when the transition completed[8], after both companies had battled legal regulators since its announcement in 2009, primarily over the lack of competition in the Search Engine market that the 10-year deal was likely to introduce[9].

Subsequently, many of Yahoo!'s most innovative search and Information Retrieval services were either shut down and migrated to YQL, deprecated for eventual shutdown, or decommissioned entirely[10]. As a result, many talented Yahoo! developers either left the company on news of the Microsoft bid[11], in advance of the Bing integration[12] or were simply let go[13][14][15][16][17], leaving several leading analysts and industry insiders to wonder what happened to Yahoo![18]. The company stated that it intended to refocus its efforts on display advertising, and strategic media/content partnerships[19]; and though popular services like SearchMonkey died, other frequently-used services such as BOSS were put on a paying-subscriber only meter[20].

In somewhat hopeful news, Yahoo! announced in 2011 that it might be re-thinking its position in Search and its Microsoft partnership[21].

Yahoo! Query Language (YQL) is a Yahoo!-specific query language for accessing information on third party sites via sandboxed (and thus non-browser-security-protocol breaching) cross-domain AJAX requests (mostly Yahoo! web properties such as Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Answers, Flickr, Upcoming, Shopping, Search, etc... but recently they've also added/exposed the ability to make requests to scrape data from all types of sites via the Yahoo! web crawler).

In 1997, Yahoo! followed suite to Microsoft's Hotmail acquisition and aggressive push with Microsoft Outlook and started their own thin webmail client (long before Google's 2004 beta and 2005 full launch of GMAIL). Delicious is one of Yahoo!'s flagship acquisitions and represents their foray into Social Bookmarking.


Yahoo! Overture

Overture was certainly one of the largest acquisitions of Yahoo! to date. With its focus on search marketing and display ads, Overture has been integrated with mixed reviews by search marketers and advertisers.

Pipes

Yahoo! Pipes is a "Social Media Search Engine" that searches for all media (images, animations, videos, audio files) to aggregate the occurrences of a brand or particular search term over the most popular media sites on the web. The project attempts to create a traditional Database Management system, however as Alex Iskold at ReadWriteWeb reminds us "unlike in Relational Databases, the data (on the web) is neither structured nor clean".[24]


BOSS

BOSS (Build your Own Search Service) is Yahoo!'s open search web services platform. The goal of BOSS is simple: to foster innovation in the search industry. Developers, start-ups, and large Internet companies can use BOSS to build and launch web-scale search products that utilize the entire Yahoo! Search index.


SearchMonkey

SearchMonkey is Yahoo! Search's new open platform for enabling "enhanced" search results. Using SearchMonkey, developers and site owners can use structured data to make Yahoo! Search results more useful and visually appealing, and drive more relevant traffic to their sites.
